Multisyllabic Words Mastery

Multisyllabic words: the young reader’s Biggest Challenge

Did you know the number of multisyllabic words in textbooks increase every year beginning as early as the 3rd grade? In fact, the vast majority of English words are multisyllabic.

This is bad news for students who struggle to read. Because these words are long and hard to decode struggling readers simply stumble over them and keep going without understanding what they’re reading.

However, many teachers have found success in helping students master multisyllabic words and have developed stronger and more confident readers.

The Process to Mastery of Multisyllabic Words

In order to guide your students towards mastery it is essential to:

  • Understand how students learn multisyllabic words;
  • Assess how much your students already know;
  • Familiarize them with Multisyllabic Words;
  • Teach them how to use Multisyllabic Words in sentences;
  • Make them comfortable with the word’s meaning;
  • Make it fun!

In this article, I’ll walk you though step by step on how to use multisyllabic word lists and I’ll also provide all the necessary resources.

How do students learn Multisyllabic Words?

Multisyllabic words file away in the brain’s long-term storage when the student knows the most common prefixes and suffixes.

Through daily, concentrated practice with a variety of activities, the student can achieve multisyllabic word mastery.

Therefore, every teacher who has struggling readers should have a year-long resource that gives students tons of fun interaction with prefixes and suffixes.

However, the development of these activities can be time consuming. To add it on top of grading, lesson planning, and all the other tasks we have to juggle each day is overwhelming!
