4 Ways to Rock Multisyllabic Word Lists

Getting students to read a multisyllabic word list is hard. Nevermind trying to get them to understand what those words mean while they are stressed out about a pandemic. Step 1: Use Multisyllabic Word Lists as Baseline Assessments

It is important to know “what your students know” before you start teaching. You want to use a multisyllabic word list that is divided into 3-, 4-, 5- 6-, and 7-syllable words. This way, you’ll be able to use the multisyllabic word list for any level of student.

Using the multisyllabic word list as a baseline assessment is easy. There is a teacher version that has the same multisyllabic words as the student version . . . except, the teacher version has checkboxes so you can easily check which words students get correct.

Since the multisyllabic word list is organized by number of syllables, it is easy to summarize the results and assign students to reading or intervention groups.

Decide to when to stop reading the multisyllabic word list.

You have at least two choices.

First, you can ask students to read for a certain amount of time i.e., how many words can you reading in one, two, or three minutes.

Second, You can tell students to stop reading the multisyllabic word list when they miss a certain number of words.

Step 2: Use Multisyllabic Word Lists Fluency Mats to Increase Word Recognition

Once you know the level of words your students need to practice i.e., 3-syllable, 4-syllable words, etc. you can easily assign them fun games to reading time.

I’ve broken down my multisyllabic word list fluency mats by number of syllables. This includes compound words all the way up to 7-syllable words.

I assign students into groups. They just roll the dice and read that column of words.

Sometimes, I put the Multisyllabic Word List Fluency Mat into a literacy center and have students write their best time out of three readings in each column. They love seeing themselves get faster!

The opportunity to practice sentence fluency can skyrocket students’ reading comprehension and fluency rates. This is because:

All you need is a single die (i.e., dice)! Students work in pairs. They roll the die and read the sentence that corresponds to the number on the die. For an extra challenge, students can time each other and write their best time in the circle to the left of the sentence!

This resource contains 39 Different Fluency Mats. Each mat has 6 columns with 6 words in each column, for a total of 36 multisyllabic words on each mat. Students roll a die and read the column that corresponds to the number on the die.

  1. Group students by their ability to read words with a various number of syllables.
  2. One student rolls a die and reads the column of words that matches the number on the die.
  3. Pass the die to the next student.
  4. Repeat above steps for a certain amount of time, or until all students have read all columns.

Optional Challenge: Give students a hand-held timer and encourage them to beat their own time when they read the same column a second time.

Remember: Students can also play this game independently as long as they have been exposed to the words and are able to independently use a decoding strategy.

Remember: Research shows that even though students are able to read a multisyllabic word in isolation, they frequently “freeze up” when reading the word within a sentence. That’s why I use fluency sentences in my classroom on a regular basis.
